Movable feast: computing Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday is a movable feast: its date shifts each year according to ecclesiastical rules tied to lunar cycles and calendar systems. The Easter family computes Easter Sunday (and related movable dates exposed by each subtool) for a given year under two common computational tracks: Gregorian and Julian (“Giulian” in the tool key).
For Western churches that follow the Gregorian calendar, start with Gregorian Easter.
Why two calculators?
Christian traditions do not all celebrate Easter on the same civil date every year. Broadly:
- Gregorian computus — used by most Western churches after the 1582 calendar reform. Output dates are expressed on the Gregorian civil calendar people use for modern business.
- Julian computus — still relevant for some Eastern Christian calculations historically tied to the Julian calendar. The Julian Easter subtool computes that track; comparing it with Gregorian results explains years when celebrations diverge.
These pages are computational calendars, not pastoral advice. Local parish schedules, translated feast names, and civil public holidays may differ even when Sunday coincides.
High-level idea of the computus
Ecclesiastical Easter is defined (in the classical Western formulation) as the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, itself determined by tables or algorithms approximating lunar phases—not by looking at the sky on the night. Algorithms such as those popularized by Gauss and later clarifications encode century corrections, epacts, and weekday calculations so a year number yields a month/day.
You do not need to memorize every table to use the tools. Knowing that Easter is algorithmic explains why two honest implementations can disagree if they target different calendar traditions, and why floating “first Sunday after the first full moon after equinox” shortcuts sometimes disagree with church tables by a week.
Gregorian Easter
Gregorian finds Gregorian Easter Sunday and related movable feast dates for any supported year. Typical companion feasts in liturgical calendars (Ash Wednesday, Ascension, Pentecost, etc.) are offset by fixed day counts from Easter Sunday; when the subtool surfaces those dates, they inherit Easter’s year-to-year movement.
Western public holidays sometimes anchor to Easter Monday or Good Friday. Confirm whether your country’s holiday dataset uses Gregorian Easter before assuming a bank is closed.
Julian Easter
Giulian / Julian computes Easter Sunday on the Julian computational track and linked movable dates. Comparing Julian and Gregorian results for the same year is a common history and liturgy exercise: some years match when converted carefully; many diverge.
Be careful when converting Julian ecclesiastical dates to modern civil Gregorian dates—the offset between calendars depends on century. The tool’s output labels indicate which calendar framing it uses; do not mix raw numbers across systems without conversion.
Passover and other calendars
Locale strings may mention Jewish Passover (Pesach) as related spring timing context. Passover uses the Hebrew calendar; it is not computed by simply copying Gregorian Easter. Treat any Passover-related display as informational context from the tool’s data, and consult dedicated Hebrew calendar sources for religious observance.

Limitations
- Algorithms implement widely taught computus rules; rare historical edge cases and local church exceptions may differ.
- Not a substitute for an official diocesan calendar.
- Year ranges are those accepted by the implementation (enter ordinary four-digit years).
- Time-of-day and timezone do not change which calendar date Easter Sunday falls on, but publishing “midnight UTC” vs local observance can confuse automated systems.
