Calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), a widely used screening metric that relates body weight to height. BMI does not measure body fat directly but offers a quick population-level weight category estimate.
Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Enter weight in kilograms and height in meters. For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m yields BMI ≈ 22.9.
WHO adult categories (approximate)
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal range |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obesity |
Exact cut-offs may differ for some Asian populations and pediatric use; this tool applies standard adult thresholds.
When to use it
Suitable for general health awareness, epidemiological comparisons, and initial screening when more precise body-composition tools are unavailable.
Limitations
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes with high lean mass may be classified as overweight. It ignores fat distribution (visceral vs. subcutaneous), age, sex, ethnicity, and bone density. It is not a diagnostic of health status or body-fat percentage.
Health disclaimer
BMI is a screening tool, not medical advice. Consult a qualified healthcare provider for personalized assessment, especially if you are pregnant, elderly, an athlete, or managing chronic conditions. Do not use BMI alone to make treatment or dietary decisions.
